Why the verb "Be"?
The verb "Be" connects who you are to the world. We use it for names, jobs, feelings, and locations. It has three main forms in the present: Am, Is, and Are.
1. Positive Forms
Grammar Rule:
- I am I'm
- He/She/It is She's
- You/We/They are We're
"I'm a Biology student."
"They're my friends."
2. Negative Forms
We use not after the verb to say something isn't true.
Subject + Be + Not
Long Form
I am not
She is not
They are not
Short Form
I'm not
He isn't
We aren't
"My math class isn't difficult today!"
3. Questions
In questions, the verb and subject swap places:
Are you a student?
Is he your brother?
Short Answers
Yes, I am. ✓
No, she isn't. ✓
Yes, they are. ✓
